Derek Chauvin will spend 22.5 years in prison – level 2

30-06-2021 15:00

In May 2020, police officers Derek Chauvin and three others arrested George Floyd. It happened in Minneapolis, US, in front of a shop, and Floyd died after the arrest.

The video of the arrest started many protests in all the world. People protested against police brutality, mainly against black people.

On Friday, a judge sentenced Chauvin to 22.5 years in prison. The judge said that it did not influence him that people in all the world knew what happened. He said that Chauvin was very violent during the arrest. Floyd’s family said that it was very hard for them to watch the video of the arrest.

Chauvin must not keep a gun or bullets for the rest of his life.

Difficult words: brutality (when a person hurts somebody else very badly), sentence (when a judge says what will happen to someone who broke the law), influence (to make someone think a certain way or do something).

You can watch the original video in the Level 3 section.
