EU candidate countries – level 1

19-12-2023 07:00

European leaders start talking about Ukraine and Moldova joining the European Union. They also say that Georgia has a chance too.

Ukraine wants to be an EU member since 2022. The country has a long history with the EU, almost 30 years. Moldova also wants to join the EU. Also from 2022. But first, the country has to change its courts and stop corruption. Then, they can start talking about joining the EU. Turkey wants to join since 1999. But the EU stops talking about it. Turkey has problems with human rights.

More countries countries want to join. They are North Macedonia, Montenegro, Serbia, Albania, and Bosnia and Herzegovina. They are at different points in joining. EU leaders also say that Kosovo may join. Not all countries agree. Some countries say that Kosovo is not an independent country.

Difficult words: join (to become part of a group), corruption (when important people, like politicians, do bad things), human rights (things which every person can do or have).

You can watch the original video in the Level 3 section.

What factors may be preventing countries like Turkey and Kosovo from joining the European Union, despite their expressed interest in becoming members?
