Europe is warming fast – level 3
10-07-2025 07:00
Europe has faced an unusually early and intense heatwave, with Germany experiencing nearly 40°C and Spain reaching up to 43°C in cities like Seville.
This extreme heat has caused wildfires in Spain, killing two farmers, and resulted in heat-related deaths in France, along with hundreds of hospitalizations. Iconic landmarks such as the Eiffel Tower closed temporarily due to the dangerous temperatures.
Climate scientists warn that Europe is now the fastest-warming continent, warming twice as fast as the global average. Several factors combine to amplify this warming: melting Arctic ice reduces sunlight reflection, drying rivers and lakes cause the land to heat more, cleaner air increases sunshine, and the Mediterranean Sea is heating rapidly. These changes contribute to increasingly frequent and severe summer heatwaves.
Experts emphasize the urgent need for both deep cuts in greenhouse gas emissions and upgrades to infrastructure, such as cooling centers, green urban spaces, and protections for vulnerable people. However, even nations with advanced systems are struggling to adapt to this accelerating climate crisis.
Difficult words: iconic (very famous or popular), amplify (to make something larger or greater in amount, importance, etc.), upgrade (an increase in improvement).
