Europe is warming fast – level 2

10-07-2025 07:00

Europe is suffering a very strong heatwave. In Germany, temperatures reached nearly 40°C, and in Spain, they climbed to 43°C.

The heat caused wildfires in Spain that killed two farmers. In France, two people died and hundreds ended up in the hospital because of heat illness. The Eiffel Tower had to close because it was too hot.

Scientists say Europe is warming faster than anywhere else. This is because ice in the Arctic is melting, rivers and lakes are drying up, clean air lets in more sun, and the Mediterranean Sea is getting hotter.

Experts warn that governments need to reduce pollution and build cooling centers and green areas. Even rich countries are finding it hard to cope with the rising heat.

Difficult words: melt (to turn into water), pollution (bad substances in the air, water, or land), cope (to deal with a problem or difficult situation).

What factors are scientists citing to explain why Europe is warming faster than anywhere else?
