Farmers in Europe protest – level 2

19-03-2024 15:00

The European Commission responded to protests by farmers across Europe.

President Ursula von der Leyen is proposing changes to Europe’s policy. These changes should lessen governmental control over EU farmers and offer them more flexibility in meeting environmental regulations. The protests took place in countries such as Spain, France, the Netherlands, and Belgium, and they are mainly against EU regulations on climate change, imports from non-EU countries, and production costs. The Commission believes that the changes will bring a balance between sustainable farming and the problems of farmers.

Von der Leyen said that the changes were necessary and that the Commission developed them with the help of farmers, individuals, and governments.

Difficult words: lessen (to make or become less), flexibility (the ability to change something easily), sustainable farming (farming in such a way to protect the natural world).

You can watch the original video in the Level 3 section.

What specific changes is President Ursula von der Leyen proposing to Europe's policy and how does she believe they will benefit both farmers and the environment?
