Feeding babies – level 1

When a woman has a baby she can breastfeed the baby or she can use formula.
Breastfeeding means that the baby drinks the woman’s milk. It is very healthy for the child. The problem is that 50% of women don’t breastfeed long enough. Sometimes they don’t get any help. Sometimes they must go back to work.
Women can buy formula. The formula is a powder. You mix it with warm water. The baby drinks it instead of the mother’s milk. Formula companies want to make money. Many formula ads are on TV and social media. These ads say that children who drink formula sleep better. They are calmer and more intelligent. Many parents believe it. But it is not true.
Difficult words: breastfeed (to feed a baby with milk from the breast), powder (a dry thing that has small pieces), ad (a short film that makes people want to buy a product or service).

A study was done in the United States. The study asked hundreds of mothers how their children did in school. The study found that there was no relationship between breastfeeding and better grades in school.
