Fire in a Chile slum – level 2

17-01-2022 07:00

On Monday, a fire started in a slum in the city of Iquique in northern Chile.

The fire moved very quickly because there were narrow streets between the houses. Videos showed dark heavy smoke coming from the fires. Firefighters could not use their fire engines, so they had to get to the fire on foot. They stopped the town’s water supply, which meant that hundreds of people did not have any water all day. The fire destroyed one hundred homes, and authorities had to prepare shelters for more than 400 people.

It took firefighters all day to control the fire.

Difficult words: slum (a very poor and crowded area of a city), water supply (pipes and tunnels which bring water to a place), shelter (a place where someone is safe from bad weather or danger).

You can watch the original video in the Level 3 section.
