Fire on German-Czech border – level 2
On Saturday, a fire started suddenly in the Czech Republic’s Bohemian Switzerland National Park.
The weather was hot and very dry this summer, and strong winds made the fire spread quickly. The flames moved close to the border with Germany, and both Czech and German firefighters evacuated several villages.
Fires happen every summer in the national park, but this fire was much bigger, and authorities said that a camper started it. People as far as 180 kilometers could smell the smoke.
The national park is very popular for its sandstone arch, which is the largest in Europe. Sandstone labyrinths and beautiful valleys are there, and around 400,000 tourists visit the park every year.
