Fire Tornado – level 2

13-10-2017 15:00

Portugal has had problems with forest fires this year. More than a third of forest fires in the EU all happened in Portugal.

A record of 268 fires in a single day was reported in August. Around 90% of the fires were started by people either by accident or on purpose.

Around 1,000 firefighters fought the fires, and 64 people died. The people were trying to flee the fire in their cars.

Most recently, someone filmed a rare ‘fire devil’ on camera in central Portugal. A ‘fire devil’ is a fire tornado which happens when a tornado touches fire.

Difficult words: report (talk about in the media), on purpose (when you do something on purpose, you want to do it), flee (escape; get away from).

You can watch the original video in the Level 3 section.
