France’s Heatwave – level 3

According to France’s health ministry, almost 1,500 people died this summer because of two extreme heatwaves where the temperatures went as high as 45.5 degrees Celsius.

Health officials say that the number is over 1,000 more deaths than average for the summer, and half of the victims were over 75 years old.

However, the health minister said that France used preventative measures and managed to lessen the mortality rate. Many large parks and swimming pools stayed open, and authorities opened “cool rooms” in Paris.

The June heatwave set record-high temperatures in seven other European countries. Due to the increasing heat, more and more Europeans are buying air conditioners.

Difficult words: preventative measure (a way to stop something bad from happening), mortality (a death).
