G20 Summit in Germany – level 3

13-07-2017 15:00

The G20 summit took place in Hamburg, Germany on Friday and Saturday. As world leaders gathered, so did the protesters. Thousands of them were in the streets, carrying slogans like ‘Smash G20’ or ‘In the name of humanity, we refuse to accept a fascist America’.

Around 20,000 police officers armed in riot gear and equipped with water cannons were deployed. The German police said that they tried to separate the violent activists from the peaceful protesters.

Difficult words: gather (come together), fascist (a government that tells its people what to do and does not let them change how the country runs), deploy (send out).
