When the conflict between Israel and Hamas started, authorities blocked some roads. As a result, trucks which collect people’s waste can’t get to dumping sites.

People throw away a lot of things and they are looking for places where to put their waste. Alternative dumping sites appear just hundreds of meters from their homes. Waste is piling up and some people are getting worried about their children’s health. Doctors report unusual skin problems and fevers, which they associate with the waste.

Officials say that the waste could contaminate water and international help may be necessary.

Difficult words: block (to make a road, pipe, or a place impossible to go through), dumping site (a place where people throw away waste), contaminate (to make something less pure or make it toxic).
