Gene-edited horses – level 2

03-09-2025 07:00

Argentina produced the world’s first gene-edited horses using a tool that changes DNA.

Scientists reduced a gene that slows muscle growth, hoping to create faster and stronger horses. The company Kheiron Biotech says this can revolutionize polo breeding.

But the Argentine Polo Association doesn’t let these horses compete. Leaders say polo should keep its natural style, where breeders choose horses to breed. Some breeders also worry that buyers from other countries may not accept GE horses.

Argentina already uses cloning and other science in horse breeding, so some people believe gene-editing is only the next step, but others fear it changes too much. For now, the sport is waiting to see if these horses will really do better than other horses.

Difficult words: gene-edited (when scientists change the DNA of a living thing to give it special qualities), revolutionize (to change completely), breed (to raise animals for special qualities).

You can watch the original video in the Level 3 section.

What are the main arguments against integrating gene-edited horses into polo competitions?
