Germany election – shock for the country – level 2

11-09-2026 15:00

The far-right AfD party won a big victory in the state election in Saxony-Anhalt. It got almost 44% of the vote. The traditional CDU party lost more than half of its supporters.

Many voters chose the AfD because they were angry with the national government and worried about issues like migration and the economy. The AfD now holds 39 seats in the state parliament, which is just three seats short of an absolute majority.

Other political parties usually do not want to work with the AfD because of its extreme ideas, but forming a stable government without the AfD will be very difficult.

Difficult words: supporter (a person who likes a team, person, or idea), issue (an important topic or problem that people talk about), absolute majority (more than 50% of the total votes or seats).

You can watch the original video in the Level 3 section.

Why did many voters choose the AfD?
