Germany election – shock for the country – level 3
11-09-2026 15:00
The far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party achieved a historic victory in the Saxony-Anhalt state election. It won 43.8% of the vote and secured 39 of the 83 parliamentary seats.
The ruling conservative Christian Democrats (CDU) suffered a major defeat when it dropped to just 17%.
Although the AfD fell three seats short of an absolute majority, its massive win has caused significant political turbulence across Germany. Experts point to voter dissatisfaction with the federal government, concerns over migration, and the popularity of local candidates as drivers of the AfD’s success. The election places immense pressure on the CDU’s policy that strictly prohibits cooperation with the far right.
With traditional coalition building extremely complicated, the AfD is actively attempting to persuade individual lawmakers to defect. If the AfD influences the state government, it plans radical policy changes regarding education, culture, and migration enforcement.
Difficult words: turbulence (a state of confusion, violence, or unstable movement), immense (extremely large or great), defect (to leave one group, country, or political party to join an opposing one).

After the AfD won 43.8% of the vote and 39 of the 83 seats while the CDU fell to 17%, what strategies is the AfD pursuing to overcome its three-seat shortfall, and which areas of policy would it seek to change if it influences the state government?
