Green methanol – level 3

14-10-2025 15:00

Denmark, long known as a pioneer in clean energy, is now developing green methanol — a low-carbon fuel made using renewable power. This new fuel can power ships and industries and serve as an ingredient for plastics, paint, and glue.

The world’s first commercial-scale green methanol plant has started operation in southern Denmark. Using electricity from a large solar farm, the facility produces hydrogen by splitting water and combines it with biogenic CO₂ from biogas created using animal waste. This process results in methanol that has a much smaller carbon footprint than traditional, fossil-fuel-based methanol. Companies like Maersk, Lego, and Novo Nordisk are already using it in shipping, toy production, and medicine. Although producing green methanol is still expensive and energy-intensive, Denmark plans to expand production and reduce costs. The project represents a milestone in the global effort to make transport and industry more sustainable.

Difficult words: pioneer (a person or company who starts something new), biogenic (made from living things), milestone (an important event or step).
