Honduras prison fight – level 3

26-06-2023 07:00

A riot in a women’s prison in Honduras has resulted in at least 41 deaths.

The government attributes the attack to gangs in response to its anti-corruption efforts within the penal system. Most of the victims were burned or shot. The authorities are working to identify the bodies. President Xiomara Castro has vowed to take drastic measures and has replaced the security minister with the national police head. The government plans to announce further measures to combat organized crime and dismantle security threats from inside prisons.

The riot is believed to be a reaction to the government’s crackdown on corruption in prisons, which included raids to take control from powerful gangs and corrupt guards. Relatives of inmates are anxiously waiting for information about their loved ones.

Difficult words: penal (related to the punishment given by law), drastic (extreme or forceful), inmate (a person who’s forced by law to stay in prison or hospital).
