How microplastics get into your body – level 2

30-03-2026 15:00

Microplastics are tiny pieces of plastic. They are everywhere, and they get into our bodies when we eat, drink, or breathe.

Plastic bottles or plastic containers release many particles of plastic into our food. These small pieces of plastic stay in our bodies and can make us sick. They cause inflammation because our body tries to fight them, but cannot destroy them. Plastics also carry dangerous chemicals. These chemicals can confuse our hormones and lead to problems like obesity or trouble having babies. We can help ourselves by making small changes, like using wooden cutting boards or glass jars instead of plastic ones. But it is not just our job; governments must also make new laws to stop companies from making so much plastic.

Difficult words: release (to let something go), inflammation (when a part of your body becomes red and painful because it is trying to fight an injury or germ), confuse (to make something unable to work the right way).

You can watch the original video in the Level 3 section.

What small changes can individuals make to reduce their exposure to microplastics?
