How the West can deal with China and Russia – level 3

01-07-2026 07:00

Global power dynamics are shifting as countries look for new ways to manage China’s rising influence and its alliance with Russia. A new proposal suggests dividing geopolitical strategy into three specialized areas.

The first area focuses on sea power and coordinates allies like Japan and Australia to control nine critical ocean choke points used by Chinese ships. The second area focuses on the rimland, crucial zones like the Middle East, where land and sea powers meet, by developing massive trade networks like the India-Middle East Economic Corridor. Meanwhile, countries are building long-term plans to counter Chinese and Russian expansion on land in Eurasia. This new view is reflected in the Pentagon’s decision to rename its regional command back to Pacific Command. This change happened because leaders realized that India’s massive mountain borders effectively isolate it geopolitically and make it far less important to China’s land-based trade plans than Central Asia.

Difficult words: dynamics (the way that people or countries behave and react to each other, and changes over time), choke point (a very narrow and important water path or street that can easily be blocked to stop ships or armies from passing), rimland (the outer edge or coastal areas of a huge piece of land, especially around Europe and Asia, where sea and land powers meet).
