India Plane Crash – level 3

11-08-2020 07:00

A plane carrying 191 people crashed at an airport in the couthern state of Kerala, India. The aircraft crashed on Friday evening when it attempted to land for a second time.

The first attempt was aborted by the pilots because of heavy rainfall. India aviation officials say that the aircraft skidded off the runway in rain, and it broke into two pieces upon landing. The plane, en route from Dubai, was bringing home Indians that were stranded by the coronavirus crisis, and it was attempting to land at Calicut terminal, which is one of Kerala’s most important international airports.

Luckily, the plane did not catch fire, and rescuers were able to get people out of the damaged aircraft. An airline spokesperson said that 18 people died in the accident and several passengers were seriously injured.

Difficult words: skid off (to slide sideways and out of control), en route (on the way), stranded (left helpless).
