Iran’s president dies – level 2

24-05-2024 15:00

Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi died in a helicopter crash near the Azerbaijan border.

The crash also killed Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian and six others. The bad weather caused the crash. Officials announced five days of mourning and said that the First Vice President Mohammad Mokhber will be the temporary president.

Raisi’s death comes at a time when Iran is facing many problems, like its nuclear program and contacts with Russia. People in Iran had different reactions to his death. Some mourned him, but others who were against his strict policies were not sad and even celebrated. This shows that people in Iran have different opinions about the government’s actions.

Difficult words: mourning (a time of sadness after someone dies), temporary (lasting only for some time), policy (ideas or a plan of a business, government, or group of people).

You can watch the original video in the Level 3 section.

What were the reactions of the people in Iran to President Ebrahim Raisi's death and what does this indicate about their views on the government's actions?
