Israel bans Al Jazeera – level 3

10-05-2024 15:00

Israel has ordered a ban on Al Jazeera, stopping the Qatari news network’s broadcasts in the country and access to its website.

The decision was made by Benjamin Netanyahu’s cabinet, and officials cited concerns over national security and alleged Al Jazeera’s alignment with Hamas. Al Jazeera strongly criticized the move, labeled it a dangerous decision, and promised to take legal action. Walid Omary, the network’s bureau chief in the occupied West Bank, emphasized the intention to obstruct coverage of the conflict in Gaza, Israel, and the West Bank.

This latest development underscores the ongoing tensions between Israel and Al Jazeera. Previously, the network accused Israel of targeting its facilities and personnel.

Difficult words: alignment (association or collaboration), coverage (the reporting of a particularly important event or subject), underscore (to emphasize the importance of something).

What was the reason behind Israel's order to ban Al Jazeera and how has the news network responded to this decision?
