It is too hot in Europe – level 2

30-06-2026 07:00

A very dangerous heatwave is hitting Europe right now, and June temperature records are breaking in many countries.

In Germany, the weather service recorded a historic temperature of over 41 degrees Celsius. Because of the extreme heat, France had to cancel big summer festivals and street parties to protect people’s health. In the Netherlands, officials issued a red alert for the first time because electric buses couldn’t charge, which stopped public transport.

Weather experts say that a big area of high pressure is acting like a heat dome. This dome traps the hot air and warm sunshine, so the land can’t cool down during the night. The hot weather is now moving from western Europe toward eastern countries like Poland, Austria, and Hungary.

Difficult words: historic (something that happens for the very first time), red alert (the highest level of an official warning), pressure (the weight of the air pushing down on the earth).

You can watch the original video in the Level 3 section.

Why did the Netherlands issue a red alert for the first time, and how did it affect public transport?
