Japan’s first female PM – level 3

09-10-2025 07:00

Japan’s ruling Liberal Democratic Party has chosen Sanae Takaichi as its new leader, putting her on track to become Japan’s first female prime minister.

Takaichi aims to revive her struggling party while an anti-immigration movement gains support. She has been active in politics since 1993 and has held many government roles. She is known for her firm stance on traditional family values. Despite being a woman, she opposes feminist ideas such as separate family names or women succeeding to the imperial throne. Her leadership comes at a difficult time for the party, which has lost public trust due to corruption scandals and rising prices. Internationally, her close ties to nationalist groups and visits to controversial war memorials have caused tension with China and South Korea. As she prepares for office, Japan and the world are watching to see whether she maintains her hardline policies or adopts a softer approach.

Difficult words: on track (likely to achieve something or reach a goal soon), stance (an opinion or position on an issue), hardline (having very strict and strong opinions and not wanting to change them).

Which two feminist ideas does Sanae Takaichi oppose concerning family names and imperial succession?
