Japan’s low birth rate – level 2

03-04-2024 07:00

A company in Japan stopped making baby diapers because fewer people needed them. Instead of that, they focus on diapers for older people.

This shows a big problem. Japan has fewer babies being born and more people dying, so its population might get much smaller. Some experts believe that Japan’s population could drop by 30% in 45 years.

Japan is trying new ideas to solve this problem. Jennifer Robertson is an expert on Japan, and he talks about the problems and what the government is doing. The government thought about using robots, but it is not as easy as they thought. Robots in Japan mostly do only simple tasks like entertainment or security.

Difficult words: diaper (a thick soft cloth which a baby has between the legs because he or she can’t use the toilet yet), population (people), entertainment (an event or activity which makes others happy).

You can watch the original video in the Level 3 section.

What impact do you think Japan's declining population will have on its economy and society in the next few decades? How do you believe the government can successfully address this issue?
