Julian Assange does not want to go to the US – level 1

23-02-2024 15:00

The court in London is deciding whether Julian Assange should go to the US.

Assange is in trouble. He shows secret US documents. This has an impact on politics and diplomacy. Assange is in London, but US officials want him in the US. If Assange returns to the US, he may go to prison for espionage. A court decides to send Assange to the US in 2022. Assange’s people want to change this.

Maybe, another court can help. But it is not sure. People are afraid of what will happen to journalists if Assange goes away. They believe that it is not fair to journalists. The government must not tell journalists what to write or speak about.

Difficult words: diplomacy (how countries speak with each other), espionage (doing things secretly to get information about countries or important people), journalist (a person who writes for newspapers, magazines, or news websites).

You can watch the original video in the Level 3 section.

What impact could Assange's extradition to the US have on journalism and freedom of the press?
