Kashmir leather workers in trouble – level 1
23-01-2025 07:00
The leather industry in Kashmir is having problems. In 2014, the government stops killing cows for food. COVID-19 and fewer international buyers make things even worse. Factory owners cannot pay for electricity or workers.
The ban ends in 2017. Many factories must close before the ban ends. Now, many people in Kashmir do not have jobs.
The government says that it will help. But business owners and workers say that nothing changes. They also have problems because imported animal skin makes it harder for them to sell their products. Workers hope that things will get better and they will not lose their jobs.
Difficult words: leather (a material which comes from the skin of an animal), owner (a person who has something, and it belongs to him), imported (a thing which comes from another country and you can buy it in your own country).
You can watch the original video in the Level 3 section.
What challenges did the leather industry in Kashmir face due to the government's ban on killing cows, COVID-19, and competition from imported animal skin products?
