Kenya floods – level 1

03-05-2024 15:00

In Kenya, floods kill at least 170 people. The president says that people in some places must leave their homes. There is more rain coming. It is dangerous to stay.

The Army is helping people leave. In the Rift Valley, north of Nairobi, a lot of water destroys part of a village. Many people die there. Rescue teams are looking for bodies near rivers. They are clearing trees and stuff from the water.

The government is getting ready to help more. They may say that it is a national disaster. But for now, they are just trying to make everyone safe.

Difficult words: flood (too much water in rivers, streets and so on), village (a group of houses and other buildings which is smaller than a tows), national disaster (a very bad event which has an impact on the whole country).

You can watch the original video in the Level 3 section.

What actions is the government of Kenya taking to aid those affected by the floods?
