King of Norway dies – level 2

03-09-2026 07:00

Norwegians are sad because King Harald V died at the age of 89. He was the king of Norway for 35 years and was very popular.

People loved him because he was kind, warm, and brought the country together. He welcomed immigrants and supported the LGBTQ+ community. After his death, his son became the new King Haakon VIII. The new king promised to serve his country using his father’s motto: Everything for Norway.

Even though there were some recent scandals in the royal family, many people in Norway still love their monarchy. They will remember King Harald V as a caring leader and a grandfather figure for the whole nation.

Difficult words: motto (a short sentence which expresses what a person thinks or believes), scandal (an action or event which causes public shock or anger because it is morally wrong), monarchy (a system in which there is a king or queen as the leader of a country).

You can watch the original video in the Level 3 section.

What motto did King Haakon VIII promise to use in serving Norway?
