Living forever – level 3
19-09-2025 15:00
Imagine you discover a potion that makes you immortal. Drinking it would freeze your body at its current age, protect you from disease, and ensure survival for as long as the universe exists. The main question is: would you drink it?
Some philosophers see immortality as full of exciting possibilities. You could explore endlessly, pursue long-term goals, and never fear death. John Martin Fischer argues that certain pleasures, like watching sunsets, would stay enjoyable, and personal or social ambitions could always provide meaning. Others believe immortality has serious problems. Bernard Williams warns that life would eventually become unbearably monotonous, with repeated activities losing their charm. He also argues that constant change in values and identity could make life unstable, even meaningless. Samuel Scheffler adds that time limits are what make human life valuable: knowing we will die pushes us to make choices. For many, eternal life might be more of a curse than a blessing.
Difficult words: potion (a drink with special power, often in stories), immortal (living forever, never dying), charm (something that makes people like it or find it attractive), curse (a bad spell or power that brings harm).
