Louvre robbery – level 3

23-10-2025 07:00

The Louvre Museum in Paris was closed after a dramatic robbery early on Sunday morning.

According to France’s culture minister, three masked thieves entered the museum through a freight lift that was being renovated. They reached the Apollo Gallery, which holds France’s remaining crown jewels, broke the windows, and stole several valuable pieces of jewelry before escaping on scooters. Reports say they used chainsaws to get inside.

Police are now investigating, and the museum has been closed. The exact number of stolen items and their total value are still unknown, but they include jewelry once owned by Empress Eugénie, wife of Napoleon III. Experts say the theft is one of the most serious and daring crimes ever to happen at the Louvre. The robbers took advantage of ongoing renovation work to enter the building unnoticed.

Difficult words: freight (goods or things that are carried by a truck, train, ship, or plane), daring (brave or risky), take advantage (to use a situation to get what you want, often cleverly or unfairly).
