Moldova elections – level 3

03-10-2025 07:00

Moldova’s latest parliamentary elections marked a crucial moment for the country’s future.

President Maia Sandu’s pro-European Party of Action and Solidarity (PAS) won over 50% of the vote, securing a clear majority of around 54 seats in parliament.

This victory enables PAS to govern alone, without coalition partners, and strengthens Moldova’s path toward European Union membership. Sandu repeatedly accused Russia of interference, claiming Moscow tried to buy votes and manipulate the outcome in favor of the pro-Russian Patriotic Bloc, which only received about 24%.

European leaders welcomed the result, describing it as a defense of democracy and a rejection of Russian influence. The outcome also matters because Moldova lies between Romania and Ukraine, with the breakaway region of Transnistria still hosting Russian troops. Many fear that a pro-Russian victory would have increased regional instability, but the strong support for PAS highlights Moldova’s determination to follow a European course.

Difficult words: crucial (very important, something you must not miss), coalition (a group of different parties or people who work together for the same goal), breakaway (a part that separates from a larger group or country).
