Most Refugees Ever – level 3

The annual Global Trends Report from the UN Refugee Agency found that the number of displaced people increased by 2.3 million from 2017 to 2018.

The total number was 70 million people, which is the highest on record. This is double the number from 10 years ago, and it means that almost 1 in every 100 people are displaced.

The report says that the causes are people fleeing civil wars, violence, ethnic persecution, drought, political problems, and poverty. Forty-one million people are displaced in their own countries while 26 million people are refugees.

A UN refugee commissioner said that the report shows that there is a rising trend ‘in the number of people needing safety from war, conflict and persecution’. The report came out ahead of Thursday’s World Refugee Day.

Difficult words: displaced people (people who have to leave their homes because of problems there), flee (run away), ethnic persecution (when people hurt or kill another group of people because they are different).
