Namibia’s president dies – level 2

09-02-2024 15:00

After President Hage Geingob’s death, Nangolo Mbumba became Namibia’s interim president. Mbumba said that he wouldn’t run in the elections, because he wished to be a school principal.

This decision allows Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah to run, which could make her Namibia’s first female president. Mbumba’s choice breaks from the norm of African leaders who usually want to stay in power as long as possible.

Namibia wants to be a leader in green energy and invest in hydrogen and minerals. This makes the country more special than any other African state.

Difficult words: interim (for a limited period), norm (how things usually are), hydrogen (a gas with no color or smell).

You can watch the original video in the Level 3 section.

What actions has Nangolo Mbumba taken that have broken away from the usual norms of African leaders in terms of political power and leadership?
