New EU deforestation law – level 3

04-11-2026 07:00

The EU’s anti-deforestation law faces an enforcement test ahead of its launch on 30 December 2026.

Under the new rules, companies selling goods such as palm oil, coffee, and cocoa must prove their products are not linked to land cleared after 2020.

However, recent investigations by Indonesian environmental organizations reveal that major international consumer brands risk breaching these regulations. Reports show that companies like PepsiCo, Unilever, and Ferrero have bought palm oil from Indonesian plantations accused of recent illegal deforestation. Despite heavy political pressure and lobbying from major exporting nations like the United States and Indonesia to delay or soften the legislation, environmental activists insist the EU must strictly enforce the rules.

Indonesia has lost vast areas of forest to illegal logging and agricultural clearing, which increased its vulnerability to severe wildfires. Experts emphasize that strict enforcement by European authorities will be essential to hold global corporations accountable and halt worldwide forest destruction.

Difficult words: enforcement (compelling compliance with a law), lobby (to influence a politician or public official on an issue), vulnerability (the possibility of being attacked, damaged, or harmed).
