New houses stop wildfires – level 3
03-06-2025 07:00
A new neighborhood called Dixon Trail in Escondido, near San Diego, has been built with special protection against wildfires. It is the first in the US to meet and go beyond California’s building rules for high-risk fire zones.
The project was developed by KB Homes and the Insurance Institute for Business and Home Safety. Every house in this area is designed to stop fires from spreading, even from wind-blown embers that can travel long distances. To achieve this, the builders used fire-resistant materials on the outside of the houses. For example, the garage doors and front doors are made of metal, and even the window shutters are covered with material that can’t burn. These features help stop fires from starting or entering homes through small gaps.
Wildfires in California have destroyed many neighborhoods in recent years. That’s why the builders wanted a community solution, not just individual homes, to increase safety and help protect lives and property.
Difficult words: ember (a small glowing piece of burning material), feature (a typical quality or an important part of something).
