New York subway shooting – level 3

19-04-2022 07:00

On Tuesday morning, ten people were shot and more than 20 injured in a subway shooting in New York City.

First, the gunman in a gas mask filled a crowded subway car with thick black smoke from a canister. Then, he fired on passengers. Reportedly, 40 to 50 passengers were in the carriage, and they tried to get through a locked door. The train slowed and reached a station.

Police recovered a gun, a hatchet, and detonated and undetonated smoke grenades. They also announced that they were looking for a 62-year-old man, who they believed was connected with the shooting.

The attack brought fear and chaos to New York City, and the city’s mayor Eric Adams said that the US needed action at all levels of government and a change in gun laws to stop such gun violence.

Difficult words: canister (a container used for storing things like food, chemicals, or gas), hatchet (a small axe), detonated (exploded).
