Nigeria floods – level 3

04-06-2025 07:00

More than 150 people have died in Nigeria after heavy rain caused severe flooding in the northern market town of Mokwa. The rain lasted for hours and destroyed homes, roads, and bridges.

The military has been sent in to help, and the president has made the rescue efforts a top priority. Emergency teams are still searching for bodies and helping survivors. Thousands of people have lost their homes and are now in temporary shelters with limited food, clean water, and medicine. Survivors describe being stranded, losing loved ones, and fearing what will come next. Some people in Mokwa said they have received little or no help from aid agencies. The situation remains desperate, with growing concern about waterborne diseases and a lack of shelter and food.

Climate experts say that while seasonal rain is common in West Africa, climate change is now making such storms much worse. They warn that extreme weather like this may become even more common in the future.

Difficult words: stranded (left without the means to move from somewhere), waterborne (carried by or through water).
