Nigeria wants to produce oil again – level 2

06-02-2025 07:00

People in Ogoniland, Nigeria, are protesting against the government’s plan to restart oil production. Their land and water suffered from oil pollution for decades, making life hard.

A 1 billion dollar cleanup project in 2018 didn’t bring change, and local people now want real action and compensation. Ogoniland’s people once believed oil production would bring money and better lives. But pollution destroyed their environment. Many people say that the cleanup agency took money but didn’t do anything. Its leader says he is working honestly, but the Nigerian government says that he may go to prison.

The government’s plan to restart oil production worries people, who fear more pollution. Families of activists who died in 1995 when fighting oil companies feel that their pain was for nothing.

Difficult words: restart (to start again), pollution (dirty water, air, or land), cleanup (putting dirt or pollution away), compensation (money someone gets because of something bad they went through).
