North Korea sends balloons to South Korea – level 2

03-06-2024 15:00

South Korea says North Korea sent many balloons with trash and poop over their border. They called this act mean and dangerous.

The sister of North Korea’s leader said that the balloons were gifts for South Koreans who wanted freedom. South Korean soldiers and special teams came to check and collect the items. People living nearby got a warning to stay away and tell the authorities if they saw any balloons. By Wednesday afternoon, teams found more than 260 balloons. Photos showed balloons with plastic bags and trash, and some had animal poop.

An official in South Korea said that North Korea might be testing their reaction but promised to stay calm. South Korean activists also send balloons to North Korea with messages, food, and USB sticks. North Korea now plans to send many more balloons to South Korea.

Difficult words: trash (things which people throw away), freedom (being free), activist (a person who is very active in bringing a change in politics or among people).

You can watch the original video in the Level 3 section.

What was the response of South Korean officials and citizens to the balloons sent by North Korea?
