Norwich Castle opens again – level 2

20-08-2025 07:00

People built Norwich Castle in 1121. Now, it reopened after a 27.5 million-pound project. The Norman fortress is now called The People’s Palace and is the UK’s most accessible castle.

For the first time, visitors can explore all five levels, from the basement up to the battlements. A modern lift allows wheelchairs and pushchairs to reach even the rooftop.

Inside, guests can walk through recreated royal rooms, see interactive displays, and enjoy colorful laser shows in the Great Hall. The new Gallery of Medieval Life shows more than 900 old objects from the British Museum.

Experts explain that Norwich was very rich in the Middle Ages, thanks to the wool trade, and people even called it England’s second city. The castle officially reopened on August 13th 2025.

Difficult words: fortress (a very strong building), accessible (easy for everyone to get in or use), recreated (newly done, fresh).

You can watch the original video in the Level 3 section.

Which industry contributed to Norwich being known as England’s second city in the Middle Ages?
