20-06-2018 15:00

International Animal Rescue released footage from 2013 showing the devastating impact of deforestation on an orangutan habitat in Indonesia. Nearly 150,000 orangutans died due to deforestation and hunting since 1999.

People are clearing the forests for palm oil plantations – Indonesia plans to increase the production of the oil to 40 million tonnes by 2020.

Difficult words: devastating (shocking and upsetting), impact (an effect), deforestation (clearing forests, cutting down trees), habitat (an animal’s natural home), due to (because of).
