Oslo attack – level 3

30-06-2022 15:00

In and near a popular LGBTQ+ pub, a shooting killed two and injured 21 people in the center of Norway’s capital, Oslo.

At about 1:15 AM, eyewitnesses said that a man took out a gun from his bag and started firing. Bystanders helped police arrest the suspect only minutes later. Police charged the 42-year-old man with murder, attempted murder, and terrorist acts.

Norway’s Prime Minister said that the police questioned the suspect in May; however, he wasn’t considered a threat. Authorities said security services knew about the Norwegian citizen since 2015 as a suspected radicalized Islamist.

The attacks happened only hours before the annual Pride Parade; organizers then canceled the event and deemed it a safety risk.

Difficult words: bystander (a person who witnesses an event or incident), radicalize (to become more extreme in political and religious beliefs), deem (to consider).
