People Attack the US Capitol – level 3

12-01-2021 07:00

Last Thursday, Donald Trump supporters and others stormed the US Capitol, forcing the seat of government into lockdown.

The US president Donald Trump made more baseless claims of electoral fraud during his speech in front of tens of thousands of chanting supporters who gathered near the White House. The event was meant to be a sideshow to the certification of the electoral college vote which would formally confirm Joe Biden’s victory in the presidential election.

However, the situation got out of control, and thousands of people marched towards the Capitol. Protesters breached exterior security barriers, and police officers drew guns as protesters tried to break into the House Chamber. Members of Congress were forced to seek shelter in offices and even wear gas masks after teargas was used by demonstrators. Rioters smashed windows and clashed with police, with one person shot and wounded on the Capitol grounds.

Difficult words: baseless (not based on facts), fraud (the crime of gaining money or other benefits by doing a trick or by lying), sideshow (a minor event or incident that distract attention from something more important), breach (to break through).
