Philippines oil spill – level 1

13-03-2023 15:00

A big tanker has problems in the rough sea near the Philippines. The tanker sinks.

The tanker carries 800,000 liters of oil. The oil gets to Mindoro Island. The beaches are dirty. The oil is everywhere. People clean the oil. It is very difficult. When they clean an area, the sea brings more oil.

Authorities know where the tanker sinks. It is 366 meters deep underwater. It is off Oriental Mindoro province.

Experts say that the oil is dangerous for sea life. About 36,000 hectares of coral reefs, trees, and sea grass are in danger.

Difficult words: tanker (a very big ship which carries oil), sink (to go to the bottom), coral reef (a structure under the sea which looks like colored rocks).

You can watch the original video in the Level 3 section.

What steps can be taken to protect the coral reefs, trees, and sea grass from the oil spill?
