Plato’s grave – level 2

06-05-2024 07:00

Volcanic ash from the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD covered the Herculaneum scrolls. Now, thanks to advanced technology, Italian scientists finally revealed their secrets.

Through artificial intelligence and infrared imaging, scientists decoded details about the Greek philosopher Plato. Plato died at the age of 81, and the scrolls tell us about his last days and his burial, too.

Professor Graziano Ranocchiea from the University of Pisa leads the team. This discovery tells us about Plato’s burial site near the Academy and promises to help decode other unread scrolls.

Difficult words: scroll (a roll of paper for writing on), advanced (modern), decode (to figure out or understand), burial site (an area where dead bodies are in the ground).

You can watch the original video in the Level 3 section.

What groundbreaking technology was used to reveal details about Plato's last days and burial from the Herculaneum scrolls?
