Poland shoots down Russian drones – level 3

12-09-2025 15:00

Poland says it has shot down several Russian drones that entered its airspace during an attack on Ukraine. The army described this as an act of aggression and a danger to Polish citizens.

Prime Minister Donald Tusk confirmed the violation and said Poland was in close contact with NATO and its allies. Damaged drones and debris were found near the border, and airports, including Warsaw’s, were briefly closed. This event marks a dangerous escalation because it directly involves NATO territory. Analysts suggest it may be part of Russia’s hybrid warfare, which includes intimidation, espionage, and disinformation. NATO has responded calmly, but the timing raises concern since Russia is beginning large military exercises in Belarus.

At the same time, European defense ministers are meeting in London to support Ukraine, while fighting in Donbas remains intense. Russia controls nearly all of Luhansk, but Ukraine still holds major cities in Donetsk. The future of the war remains uncertain.

Difficult words: escalation (a situation becoming more serious and dangerous), intimidation (frightening or threatening someone), espionage (secretly collecting and reporting information).
