Problems with Mexican paradise – level 2

11-04-2025 15:00

Tulum in Mexico became very popular during the pandemic. Many people wanted to live or work there because of the nice beaches and relaxed life.

A lot of new apartments were for sale, but many buyers now say they lost their money. Some developers promised to build homes but never finished them. One developer started six projects but finished only one. Some buyers paid almost all the money and got nothing. One developer died, and others ran away.

Some people tried to go to court, but it was hard to get help because of Mexican law. In some cases, the sellers didn’t own the land. Now, many people say they will only buy homes that are already finished.

Difficult words: developer (a company which creates or builds things), project (a planned task), law (rules of a country).

You can watch the original video in the Level 3 section.

How did developers' actions and legal complications lead buyers to lose money and change their approach to purchasing homes?
