Road Explosion in Tanzania – level 3

16-08-2019 07:00

On Saturday the 10th, an oil tanker in Tanzania lost control and overturned after swerving to avoid hitting a motorcycle on a busy road.

Around 150 people gathered around the tanker, and some were trying to siphon away fuel when the vehicle burst into flames and exploded. This happened around 20 minutes after the crash, killing at least 61 people and injuring 70 more.

The incident happened in the town of Morogoro in the eastern part of the country.

Difficult words: swerve (suddenly change direction), gather (come together), siphon (use a siphon [a type of tube] to draw off some of the fuel).
