Rome’s new metro line – level 3

28-05-2024 07:00

The project to build a metro line under Rome’s historic center has reached a crucial stage.

This metro line will run beneath significant cultural heritage sites like the Colosseum, Trajan’s Column, and the Basilica of Maxentius. Chief engineer Andrea Sciotti says the 3-billion-euro project is one of the most complicated projects in the world. The flagship station at Piazza Venezia has an 85-meter-deep wall and will be completed by 2034.

The Metro C line has been in progress for two decades because of bureaucratic and funding delays. The main obstacle is the underground ruins of Imperial Roman and Medieval civilizations that require extensive archaeological work. Italy’s culture ministry is involved in the project. Sciotti says new technology allows digging under historic sites without damaging them.

Once finished, Metro C will connect the historic center to the Vatican and help improve Rome’s public transport.

Difficult words: cultural heritage (monuments, buildings, and sites that we inherit from the past), flagship (the best or most important building, product, or idea), bureaucratic (related to the administration of government).
